New, Spa-Inspired Treatment Choices for Rosacea Sufferers

While it may look like acne, Rosacea is actually caused by scores of tiny, dilated blood vessels near the skin surface that become inflamed. It’s a relatively common skin condition that’s recognized by the presence of facial redness and can be triggered by a number of variables, including stress, smoking, alcohol consumption, food allergies, asthma, pollen and mold, to name a few. It can migrate toward the eyes and, in severe cases, cause nasal deformities.

Topical steroidal creams and oral antibiotics have been the standards of treatment to date and there is no cure for the condition. Nearly 67% of all rosacea sufferers are women, and men and women who are light-skinned are more susceptible than those with darker complexions.

Camouflage makeup is a temporary, cosmetic fix for the appearance of rosacea. It is not a symptomatic treatment. Sufferers who choose this option should seek products that are hypoallergenic, mild, non-comedogenic, fragrance-free and suitable for sensitive skin. Combining green and white coverage makeup as a base works to counteract the appearance of facial redness.

A New Course of Treatment

Sylvie Archenault, founder and CEO of Sonage Skin Care has introduced a rosacea treatment course that can be used in either a professional esthetic spa, dayspa or at home. The treatment protocol features products from the Sonage family of skincare and are formulated with natural ingredients.

The professional course uses Cleanser, Cleansing Crème, Facial Rinse, Anti-inflammatory toner, Gel Exfoliant, Salicylic Acid (20%), Vitality Night Control, Energizer Protein Mask and Presage SPF 15. The at-home regimen involves a daily treatment with Cleanser, Cleansing Crème, Facial Rinse, Anti-inflammatory toner, Vitality Night Repair Crème and Presage SPF 15. The nighttime protocol utilizes all the formulations of the daytime regimen except for the Presage SPF 15.

The protocols have anti-inflammatory effects and help to restore the skin barrier and protect it while slowing the inflammation in capillary walls, thereby reducing the appearance of redness.

In addition to the Sonage rosacea treatment protocol, clients can help to prevent rosacea symptoms from flaring by taking steps to avoid known triggers. They include:
*Reducing sun exposure and wearing sunscreen as well as sun protective clothing and headgear
*Reducing stress by employing regular exercise (although overly strenuous exercise can trigger a flareup)
*Eating a healthy, balanced diet
*Getting the right amount of sleep
*Practicing relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing, meditation and yoga
*Avoiding spicy foods
*Avoiding alcohol
*Protecting the face and nose from cold temperatures and wind
